Short answer: the linked Diablo Web client offers a limited free demo. To load the full game, provide your own legally permitted DIABDAT.MPQ. It does not provide a full retail copy or cloud saves. Find the Diablo link in our 25-game directory ↗.
Is the browser version a free demo or the full game?
The project's game-data documentation separates these modes. Play Free Demo uses the shareware archive spawn.mpq, fetched by the app on first use. Load Your MPQ accepts DIABDAT.MPQ from your own legal copy. The demo contains limited content; retail game data is not included.
| Mode | Data | What you choose |
|---|---|---|
| Limited demo | spawn.mpq shareware archive | Play Free Demo |
| Full-game mode | Your own DIABDAT.MPQ | Load Your MPQ, or drop the file onto the start screen |
The distinction matters if you arrived from a “free browser games” post. Free access to a client does not remove the data requirement for the full game. Our directory does not host either file or supply commercial game assets.
How do I start the linked Diablo project?
- Open the project's browser client.
- Choose the demo for limited play, or select your own MPQ for full-game mode.
- Allow time for the initial data preparation and browser-engine load.
- Read the client's controls and limitations before beginning a long session.
These steps follow the project documentation. We have not completed an independent campaign play test. If loading fails, keep your save data in mind before trying any reset; the browser-game troubleshooting guide separates loading, device and data checks.
How can I keep or move my Diablo saves?
The save instructions say game files and saves are stored locally in the current browser/profile through IndexedDB. There is no cloud-save service. A new browser, another profile or a different device should not be assumed to contain the same progress.
Use Manage Saves to export saves you want to keep. The documented import options are its upload control or dropping a .sv file onto the start screen. Make a backup before clearing browser data or switching devices. Keep the exported file somewhere you can identify later, rather than relying on an unnamed item among unrelated downloads.
If an error offers Reload and Try Again, the project describes that as returning to the start screen without clearing data. If reload cannot proceed, its instructions advise keeping the page open and downloading any offered saves first. Avoid making a destructive reset your first troubleshooting step.
What about mobile controls and online multiplayer?
The playing notes prefer mouse and keyboard. Touch controls exist but still need improvement; landscape gives the game more room. See our mobile browser-games guide for the wider directory.
The project's multiplayer section calls online support experimental, not finished support for ordinary play. An experimental backend or network code is not proof of a dependable online session.
Quick answers
Can I play Diablo in a browser without buying the full game?
The client provides a limited shareware demo. Full-game mode requires your own permitted retail data file.
Why does it ask for DIABDAT.MPQ?
That is the retail data file expected by full-game mode. The client does not include it.
Will my saves follow me to another device?
They are local to the current browser profile. Export and then import a backup using the documented save controls.
Is a browser game really no download?
It still loads code and data. Read our no-download vs no-installer guide for the distinction.
