Short answer: Surfd is a browser surf experience. WebXash is a separate Half-Life / Counter-Strike frontend that requires your own game data. Choose the corresponding entry in the Radiant Optimizer Games directory ↗.
CS Surf and CS 1.6 are not the same browser project
| Question | Surfd / CS Surf | WebXash / CS 1.6 |
|---|---|---|
| Main task | Practice surf movement and timed routes. | Load Half-Life or Counter-Strike game data into a browser engine. |
| Game files | The interface offers browser map loading. | Supply your own valve/cstrike files. |
| Input | Desktop keyboard and mouse. | The README calls for keyboard and mouse. |
| Online play | Do not assume a full CS combat server. | Needs a compatible server's direct WebSocket address. |
The current Surfd interface and WebXash README are the sources for these differences. A working start page is not an independent multiplayer test.
How do you control CS Surf at Surfd?
Surfd shows WASD movement, mouse look, Space or wheel-down jump, Shift duck, R restart, and Escape for the menu. Click Play to capture the mouse. Its beginner ramp instruction is to release forward input and strafe toward the ramp's face while turning the mouse gently.
Start with a route whose tier and checkpoints suit your experience. The interface provides a practice facility, a route-view option, restart controls and personal-best timing. Those tools let you work on one section instead of restarting a complete route after every mistake. Check the current settings for your bindings rather than assuming your desktop Counter-Strike configuration transfers automatically.
What does WebXash need for CS 1.6?
According to the setup instructions, select a root game folder containing valve and/or cstrike, or a ZIP preserving that structure. A folder called Half-Life with those directories beneath it is different from selecting an unrelated download folder.
The frontend reads the selected files into the browser's in-memory WASM filesystem. Permission to reuse a folder can persist between visits. The project does not supply a replacement for your owned game data. Its general save manager uses browser storage, but the README specifically says that manager is disabled when CS 1.6 is selected.
Can I join normal Counter-Strike servers?
WebXash documents compatible web-server setups and a direct WebSocket IP/port. Its FAQ says ordinary Internet server discovery is unavailable; a familiar Steam server browser should not be expected. Enter a compatible server address in the frontend's multiplayer field, then follow the project's in-game LAN-menu instructions. We have not verified a live server connection.
For browser/device errors, read our troubleshooting guide. The no-download guide explains why engine ports can still require files.
Quick answers
Do I need Counter-Strike installed to use Surfd?
Its interface offers a separate browser surf experience. That is different from WebXash, which needs your own game data.
Is CS Surf the full CS 1.6 game?
No. The linked surf experience and the listed CS 1.6 frontend are separate projects with different purposes.
Does WebXash work like a phone shooter?
Its mobile FAQ says keyboard and mouse are needed for this web port. Read the mobile compatibility guide before choosing a project.
